Does Acupuncture Work?

In the past 2000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other health modalities combined. Acupuncture is widely practiced in Asia, Soviet Union, and Europe. It is now being used more and more in the United States.
Acupuncture treatments can be given in conjunction with other modalities such as conventional Western medicine, physical therapy, chemotherapy, psychotherapy etc.

How does it work?
The efficacy of Acupuncture has prompted tremendous research, the more common explanations of its course of action are mentioned below.

Eastern perspective:
The theory of acupuncture is based on the patterns of energy (Qi) flow through the body. During normal state of health, energy travels smoothly through a network of meridians in the body. Disruption in this normal Qi flow is responsible for occurrence of disease.
Acupuncture corrects these imbalances by releasing energy blocks and re-establishing normal Qi circulation, thus stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Western perspective:
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain, or they trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones, which influence the bodies own internal regulating system.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
